Ladies Mile

Verse
Women of the night
Both young and old
Seeking some respite
A break from the cold
Sea men on the street
Money paid and repeat
Hiding from the beat
Need a place to retreat

Chorus
There’s a warm welcome smile
Sanctuary from vice and vile
Weary bodies rest a while
At the end of ladies’ mile
A sympathetic ear
An interlude from fear
A chance to disappear
Shed and wipe a tear

Verse
Still born in disgrace
Exit fast with ashen face
Paper bound with no trace
Relieved to leave this place
Days start with a chore
For those who some abhor
Come desperate and poor
Here’s an open door

What is it about?

Ladies Mile

In Clifton there is a stretch of road known as Ladies Mile. A few years back my wife had a hospital appointment in Bristol and needed to use the facilities! Whilst loitering outside I noticed a Blue Plaque in honour of a women named Victoria Hughes. She helped sex workers and the loo that she was responsible for provided refuge.
